My favorite childhood movies began when a sympathetic protagonist (young, male) discovered he was The One, destined to save a magic realm over a series of character-building adventures. In my film, a fairy princess delivers such an announcement to an architect at a bus stop. But the architect (female, grown up, employed) seriously does not want to be The One, because she is late for a meeting. I liked the idea of a character who would simply decline a magic crown—not because she doubted her own power, but because—well, she’s doing something else. After all, the epic spectacle of a cosmic messenger kneeling at your feet might, if it occurred at an inopportune moment, be kind of embarrassing.
Ultimately, the fairy princess learns that sometimes the leader you seek is closer than you think. But there's another message: not every architect would rather be a fairy queen.
